You’ve decided on buying second hand and you desperately want an armchair to complete your living space or the corner of your bedroom, but where do you start? The world of second hand furniture can be vast; so much choice of colour, style and shape can be daunting, but here are a few tips to help you decide on this very important purchase.
When deciding on the style of chair you’d like, you need to consider the style of your home and in particular the room you envisage the chair to go in. Second hand armchairs can vary, from traditional button back style with ornate detailing on chair legs, to curvy, highly patterned fabric chairs or even the more laid back, comfortable and neutral armchairs.
If your home is fairly modern in style overall, then it may be a good idea to keep to a fairly neutral and comfortable chair to perfectly complement your space. Or perhaps your home is really traditional, and verging on Georgian style? If so, a button back chair would go perfectly. A highly contemporary home may also look fantastic with a classic button back chair as a feature piece. As long as it goes with your décor, incorporating this in your home may just give it that quirky twist you’ve been looking for.
Armchairs are available in a variety of colours, from neutral shades to highly textured or patterned fabric. The choice is really yours; and if you found the perfect style of chair, but the colour of the fabric wasn’t quite right you could always re-upholster. Perhaps you’ve found an armchair with neutral fabric; it goes nicely in your home but needs a bit of help tying into your room theme? Adding a cushion or a throw can ease chair into your current space and really pull the look of the room together.
Choosing the size of chair you need all depends on the room in which you are going to put the chair. Most living rooms have ample space for an armchair, but don’t forget, armchairs can fit perfectly in smaller spaces like a hallway or the corner of your bedroom. Because armchairs are small, they make great use of small spaces, making them a great escape for some quiet reading time.
Budget The cost of second hand furniture can vary greatly. Second hand armchairs tend to range from around a hundred to several hundred pounds. However, as always, the price depends on the style and quality. You can buy an older armchair with some character for around a hundred pounds, whilst a classic button back armchair would be expected to cost a little more.
